Why RLI? (Livelihoods Crisis)

India is in the throes of a livelihoods crisis:

Farming at the edge: Rising input costs, degrading soils, and fragile ecosystems have made agriculture increasingly unsustainable.
Informal and insecure work: 94% of India’s workforce is informal, without social security or protections.
Youth unemployment: Over 42% of young people under 25 remain jobless, their potential untapped.
Women excluded: Women’s labour force participation is among the lowest globally; fewer than 15% own land or productive assets.
Gender pay gap: On average, women earn nearly 20% less than men, reflecting systemic inequity.
Weak producer institutions: Many farmer producer companies struggle with resources, governance, and market linkages, limiting their sustainability.
Climate shocks: Erratic rains, droughts, and floods devastate fragile incomes and deepen rural distress.
Migration pressures: Lack of viable local livelihoods pushes families to migrate, further weakening rural economies.
